William John Knox, born in 1878, embarked on his medical career at Queen's University, Kingston, in 1899. Intrigued by tales of the exotic seaport of Vancouver, he found himself practicing medicine in Kelowna after a brief stint as a ship's doctor. His dedication to healthcare in the region endured for an impressive 63 years.

Apart from his medical contributions, Dr. Knox served on the school board and became the medical inspector for schools in 1912, reporting annually for 53 years on the condition of schools and student health. In honor of his community contributions, the school was named Dr. Knox Junior - Senior High School. Today, Dr. Knox Middle School stands as a hub of education for young minds in grades 7 to 9.
